چکیده

We discuss requirements surrounding a mobile navigation system for visually impaired people. We describe an initial prototype based on a PDA using GPS location tracking. This prototype has so far failed to provide reliable location detection, due to the use of GPS in built up environments. We discuss how our system may improve detection by switching between a range of different location tracking technologies. However, we conclude that there may still be times when these technologies fail, and more work is needed on how to support the user in such

Investigating context-aware clues to assist navigation for visually impaired people

It is estimated that 7.4 million people in Europe are visually impaired [1]. Limitations of traditional mobility aids (i.e. white canes and guide dogs) coupled with a proliferation of context-aware technologies (e.g. Electronic Travel Aids, Global Positioning Systems and Geographical Information Systems), have stimulated research and development into navigational systems for the visually impair...

The Goals of the Curriculum Orientation and Mobility in Iran and America (Especially the Visually Impaired Students)

This study has compared the goals and objectives of orientation and mobility (O&M) curriculums in Iran and America. The Bereday’s comparative method was used in this research. Initially the goals were defined and interpreted based on two criteria including the level of generality and the level of coverage and then they were compared by juxtaposition. The study found that American O&M curriculum...

User involvement in the design and evaluation of a smart mobility aid.

This paper describes the design and evaluation of an innovative smart mobility aid for the frail visually impaired. The Personal Adaptive Mobility AID (PAM-AID) was developed to address the difficulties in personal mobility of the frail and elderly visually impaired. The paper provides an overview of the PAM-AID research at Trinity College and describes the evolutionary nature of the design pro...

Sensor Based Assistance System for Visually Impaired

This paper is focussed to develop an electronic navigation system for visually impaired, that makes use of sensors for obstacle detection. People who are visually impaired struggle every day in performing actions that can be as simple as moving from one point to another without falling down or knocking against obstacles. An Electronic Travel Aid (ETA) is a form of assistive technology having th...
